BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing (Level 1 ARAR)

This a nationally recognised award designed for anyone serving or selling alcohol in licensed premises including outlets such as:

Pubs - convenience stores – bars - sports and social clubs – hotels – entertainment venues – restaurants - nightclubs - off-licences - leisure parks – supermarkets – casinos or any venue or site where alcohol is sold.

The BIIAB has developed the BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing in response to industry-wide training requirements to demonstrate commitment to responsible alcohol retailing.

This qualification provides essential knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities of alcohol retailers authorised by a personal licence holder to sell alcohol.

It will enable those who complete the qualification to act within the law to support the designated premises supervisor to retail alcohol responsibly on their licensed premises in line with the 4 Licensing objectives detailed in the 2003 Licensing Act.

The BIIAB  Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing provides additional protection to licensed premises operators and candidates alike as it contains 3 mandatory questions that ensure every candidate fully understands the legislation concerning underage sales, serving persons who are drunk and the licensing objectives.

What does the qualification cover?

The course content is detailed below;

1. The nature of alcohol and the effect that it has on the human body. 
2. The main issues in the 2003 Licensing Act as they relate to alcohol retailers and servers. 
3. Licensing law in relation to the protection of children from harm. 
4. The social responsibilities relating to the retail sale of alcohol. 
5. How to recognise drunkenness and your duty not to serve drunken customers. 
6. Appropriate strategies that can be adopted to prevent or eliminate alcohol-related    crime and conflict and the importance of personal safety and security issues.

What course materials are available?

A handbook covering the course content is supplied to all candidates. This handbook should remain premises where you work as a teaching aid for new staff.

How long is the training course and where can I take it?

The BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing has been designed to be delivered in less than a day and includes a short multiple-choice examination.

Courses can be conducted locally.The examination consists of 25 multiple-choice questions, three of which are compulsory. To pass the examination, candidates must correctly answer the three compulsory questions in section one and 14 out of 22 in section two.

What does the candidate get to say he/she has passed?

A nationally recognised certificate awarded by BIIAB stating that the candidate has successfully achieved the BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing.
